Driveway Installation

  • 1. Site preparation: The site preparation process is essential for the long-term durability and stability of gravel. The site should be cleared of any vegetation, debris, or other obstructions. The soil should be graded to ensure proper drainage, and any low spots or high spots should be leveled out. If the soil is unstable or prone to erosion, it may be necessary to install a layer of larger crushed stone or a woven-geotextiles fabric to aid in stabilty and add a separation layer before adding the gravel.
  • 2. Consider edging the driveway: Edging a gravel driveway with a border of timbers, bricks, pavers, or other materials can help to keep the gravel in place and prevent it from spreading onto the surrounding lawn or landscape.
  • 3. Choosing the right gravel: There are several types of gravel that can be used for a driveway, including various crushed stone, pea gravel, and river rock. The type of gravel chosen will depend on the desired aesthetic, the expected traffic, and the climate in the area. We generally start with an ABC base or a clean gravel base if the area is wet, prone to flooding. For example, pea gravel may not be suitable for areas with heavy rainfall, as it can become displaced over time.
  • 4. Gravel depth: The depth of the gravel layer will depend on the expected traffic and the size of the gravel used. A common depth for a residential driveway is 4-6 inches, with ABC used for the base layer and, if desired for aesthetic purposes, smaller stones used for the surface layer.
  • 5. Compaction: Proper compaction of the gravel layers is essential for creating a stable, even surface. A plate compactor or vibratory roller should be used to compact each layer of gravel as it is added. The gravel should be moist during compaction.

Driveway Rejuvenation

You may not always need new gravel!

Over time, your expensive gravel doesn't actually disappear—it migrates to the shoulders, gets shifted around by traffic, or sinks into the soft earth. Most contractors will tell you that you need all new gravel.

I take a different approach. Using specialized grading equipment, we can often regrade your driveway utilizing existing materials. This process saves you in material costs while restoring your driveway to a "like-new" condition. This where an on-site visit is helpful, we can determine the best approach to take.

Overall, installing a gravel driveway can be a relatively simple and affordable option for homeowners, but it does require proper preparation and maintenance to ensure long-term durability and stability.

Maintenance

Gravel driveways are a popular choice for homeowners due to their durability, affordability, and aesthetic appeal. However, like any other driveway surface, they require maintenance to keep them in good condition. Here are some tips for maintaining a gravel driveway:

  • 1. Regularly remove debris: Leaves, twigs, and other debris can accumulate on a gravel driveway and trap moisture, leading to erosion and potholes. Use a leaf blower or rake to regularly remove debris from the driveway.
  • 2. Fill in potholes: Over time, potholes can form on a gravel driveway. To prevent further damage, fill in potholes with additional gravel and compact it with a tamper or other heavy tool.
  • 3. Add more gravel: Over time, the surface of a gravel driveway can become worn down due to weather and everyday usage. Adding a fresh layer of gravel can help to restore the surface and improve drainage.
  • 4. Maintain proper drainage: Proper drainage is essential for preventing erosion and other damage to a gravel driveway. Make sure that water is flowing away from the driveway when possible and not pooling in low spots.
  • 5. Control weeds: Weeds and grass can grow up through the gravel in a driveway, which can be unsightly and can also lead to erosion. Use a weed killer or hand pull weeds to keep them under control.
  • 6. Re-grade the driveway: Over time, the surface of a gravel driveway can become uneven and develop low spots. Re-grading the driveway with a tractor or other heavy equipment can help to level the surface and improve drainage.
  • 7. Give us a call: If your gravel driveway requires significant repairs or maintenance, it may be best to hire a professional. A contractor with experience in gravel driveway maintenance can provide a range of services, from pothole repair to grading and leveling.

Overall, maintaining a gravel driveway requires regular attention and care, but with the right techniques and materials, it can last for many years and provide a durable, attractive surface for your home.
