Gravel FAQ's

Gravel Types and Their Common Uses

While you can get various different types of gravel, they have different uses. Here's some of the most common to our area.

ABC Crush and Run

ABC is a versatile product. It can be used for both a base or a finished surface for your driveway, walk way, patio etc. It is a combination of rock from 1" down to a powdered dust that settles into the voids and compacts nicely. While some people prefer to cover it with a more decorative gravel, it is not required.

Clean Gravel or Washed Gravel

#57 Gravel and #67 are the two most common clean gravels used in our area. The differences are the sizes, #57 will typically be 3/4" gravel with no fines thats been washed clean. #67 will be 3/4" and smaller but again, with no fines and washed clean. They can both be used for a top dressing over ABC or standalone if the area is not muddy. They are also commonly used for under concrete slabs, french drain applications, drainage lines etc.

#78 or Pea Gravel

Pea gravel is a smaller, roughly 3/8" washed gravel and is used for walkways, as a top dressing over ABC for driveways, patios etc. It is a more decorative gravel mainly for aesthetic purposes to create an attractive finished surface.

Screenings

Screenings are basically a rock sand in that its comprised of very fine pieces of crushed rock down to the size of a grain of sand. It's used for leveling under pavers and bricks. Its also used to sweep in the joints of sidewalks and patios.

Ballast

Ballast is a larger stone. It varies in sizes from 1 1/2" up to 4". Some common uses for it are railroad ballast, construction entrances, construction pads or we use it at times to help stabilize softer ground before installing ABC.

Rip-Rap

Rip-Rap can range in classes, or sizes. The most commonly used is Class A or Class B. They range in sizes from 5" up to 16" depending on the Class. They are used for erosion control, runoff protection, stabilty control and landscaping features.

River Rock

River rock is available from sizes of about a marble up to about a softball. Its a smoother rounded rock with colors of white, tan, brown etc. It's a decorative gravel for top dressing ABC, sidewalks, patios etc or if the larger sizes are desired it makes for nice "mulch" and landscaping features.
